Aaron Smith lives in Bellingham, WA, and has spent much of his career in education as a middle and high school music teacher and principal. He cares deeply about helping students stay engaged in their learning through project-based approaches and now serves as Assistant Director at the Northwest Career and Technical Academy.
His interest in filmmaking began in 2014 after taking classes at the Northwest Film Center in Portland, OR. A few years later, his connection with country music legend Loretta Lynn and her longtime dressmaker, Tim Cobb, led to the chance to begin capturing their story in a documentary that’s still in production.
Aaron is excited to be part of the Washington Filmworks Documentary Mentorship, learning all he can while continuing work on Loving Loretta (working title). He’s especially passionate about telling stories that shine a light on the impact and contributions of LGBTQ+ voices in country music.
