Mentors from New York, California and Washington join the Washington Filmworks Above the Line Mentorship to support our cohort of three Washington-based documentary filmmakers.
“The film industry is a networked economy and developing authentic relationships with seasoned filmmakers can help move a career forward,” said Executive Director Amy Lillard. “We are thrilled that some of the industry’s leading documentary voices have come on board to mentor our Washington filmmakers. It is a thoughtfully curated group of mentors that are perfectly paired with our mentees, and we can’t wait to see how these documentary projects evolve.”

The Above the Line Education Forum is an online business of film skills program for early to mid-career Washington producers and directors from historically underrepresented communities. Program graduates have the opportunity to move a film project forward with the support of in-state and out-of-state mentors through the Above the Line Mentorship.
Washington Filmworks is training the next generation of producers and directors with 55 individuals participating in our Above the Line program to date. 52% of participants from the first cohort since completing the program created paid film industry jobs employing 138 individuals.
The next Above the Line Education Forum application window will open Fall 2026.
