Goldendale is the county seat of Klickitat County, Washington. With a population of approximately 3,400, it is a rural agricultural community on U.S. Route 97, which runs along the boundary of the city. On the eastern slopes, Goldendale offers sweeping and dramatic views of the Cascade Mountains.

Oregon Trail Pioneers found the Valley of the Little Klickitat an inviting place to graze their cattle in belly deep bunch grass, on land where they could make their homesteads. Reflecting that heritage, the Klickitat County Fair and Rodeo feature parades, gatherings on the courthouse lawn, and barbecues with local meat, fruit, and produce. Cattle drives, complete with cowboys, cowgirls, horses, dogs, and all the paraphernalia of the Old West, give testimony to that heritage.

Tourist attractions include the Goldendale Observatory, the Maryhill Museum, Maryhill Stonehenge on the Columbia River, and the 1903 Presby Museum, which houses a newly restored 1898 Russell Steam Tractor. The scenery surrounding Goldendale is unsurpassed, with vistas where multiple snowcapped peaks can be viewed as one travels past wineries and vineyards. You’ll also spot wind and landfill gas turbines making electricity to fill the nation’s need, as the area is fast becoming a mecca of renewable energy.
