SB 6027: Campaign Ends, but Community Strong as Ever

Save the Date for Post-Legislative Events in Seattle and Spokane

Late yesterday, we learned that SB 6027 (the bill to increase funding for the Motion Picture Competitiveness Program) was not included in the final budget. It is our understanding that the only tax preferences that made it into the final budget were those that were expiring and there were no new preferences included.

This year’s legislative session proved to be a tough political environment. With a Republican-lead Senate requiring no new revenue and the Democratic House of Representatives calling for the closure of over $350 million in tax preferences, the fact that our bill continued to be part of the conversation is a true tribute to the grassroots efforts of our statewide film community.

We would like to thank you for your unwavering support over the past 5 months. While the outcome is not what we hoped for, we are convinced that our collective efforts raised the film industry’s profile in Olympia and beyond!

Washington Filmworks would also like to thank the prime sponsor of the legislation,  Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles (D, 36), as well as Senators Billig (D, 3), Fain (R,47) and Benton (R, 17), for co-sponsoring the legislation. If your senator and representatives expressed their support for SB 6027 during this legislative session, please take the time to write and thank them for their support.

Please mark your calendars for our post-legislative session debrief events in Seattle and Spokane this July. Here we will celebrate our successes, discuss our opportunities, and begin to plot and plan for what is next for our industry.
