Jada Godwin (they/them) is a writer and filmmaker who recently graduated from the University of Washington’s Cinema and Media Studies program. During their time at UW, they were the Head of Operations for the university’s film production club, helped run the UW School of Drama’s social media accounts, and stage-managed UW Undergraduate Theater Society’s sold-out production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Their previous documentaries include FISHMONGER, featuring an “old school” fishmonger reflecting on his mentor’s legacy and his own goals in taking over a historic fish stand at Pike Place Market, and BERTHA BABY, starring a non-binary drag queen advocating for art and acceptance after escaping their childhood cult. They are currently working on their media production company Pocket Portal Productions, creating videos for local businesses such as Zulu’s Board Game Café. Most of Jada’s work highlights queer experiences and people, focusing on this community in an attempt to create more opportunities and visibility than they were given as a queer youth. Growing up in rural Eastern Washington without a visible queer community, they were reliant on the media they consumed to learn about “being queer”. As such, they know just how crucial media is in affirming queer identities. Queer people are a vibrant, persevering folk who need to see their stories told, and Jada strives to do just that.
