Bad Animals re-recording mixer, sound designer, and audio engineer Paul Miller recalls that his passion for sound began in high school. That led him to pursue a bachelor’s degree at the Seattle Art Institute. His first big gig after college was an internship at Bad Animals, which quickly became freelance work when they witnessed his skill level and exceptional work. Paul went on to contribute sound design to National Geographic’s Alaska State Troopers, the PBS children’s series BizKid$, and the late-night show THE 206 at Bad Animals.
Once those projects ended, Paul freelanced for Microsoft as an Xbox Live Video Marketplace Metadata Specialist before becoming a Tech Support/Product Specialist at Mackie (LOUD). After leaving Mackie, Paul began freelancing full-time. He honed his sound design skills by working on feature films (Prospect), VR films, short films, web shows (Dynamo Dream), and corporate videos with sound company Impossible Acoustic. He also enjoyed working with Vossler/343 on (HALO Infinite), recording the dialogue for their mocap shoots and VO sessions.
In April 2022, ten years after his first gig and internship at Bad Animals, Paul took a staff position at the Seattle studio. He records, sound designs, and mixes various projects, including the Netflix indie series Penelope, the Indigenous documentary film series Reciprocity 2, Wayfinders, and the feature-length documentary Pain and Peace. He has recorded ADR for the episodic series The Umbrella Academy, Under the Bridge, Cobra Kai, and the feature film Creed III, to name a few. “No matter if you are an intern, freelancer, or staff engineer, what you put into it is what you will get out of it. You have more control of the outcome than you think.” Paul is excited about the future of the creative media industry and will use his sound experience to help filmmakers, producers, and creatives bring their projects to life.
