FAQ From Property Owners for Film Liaisons

This information is provided for reference only and is not legal advice.

1. Why would I want to allow filming at my private property?

Allowing someone to film at your home or business can be both lucrative and fun, as long as you educate yourself about what’s involved. Whether it’s just one time, or if indeed your place is “discovered” and becomes an attractive location for future film projects or even a series, it can be an exciting and memorable experience.

2. How do film projects help my community?

Film projects create jobs throughout the state and will generate spending with local businesses like hardware stores, hotels and restaurants. These investments are good for the local economy. The increased visibility for a community following filming also may generate new visitors for years to come.

3. My property is run down, would they still be interested in it?

Yes! Film productions are looking for locations that help them tell a story. In some cases that story requires abandoned buildings, old barns, vacant warehouses or weathered homesteads.

4. Our property is occupied or we are actively operating a business here, does that disqualify it from being a good film location?

Not necessarily. Film productions are accustomed to working with property owners to minimize the impact or disruption.

5. Why should I have my property listed on the Washington Filmworks Location Database?

Our film location database is a searchable gallery which Washington Filmworks shares with productions. This is a free service. The platform brings together those who are looking for film locations, with those who have locations available for filming.

6. What should I do if a production contacts me after seeing my property on the Location Database?

The Production will not contact you without first going through the Washington Filmworks Film Office, who will contact you to gauge your interest in the project and availability. Washington Filmworks offers guidelines for property owners as well as an extensive list of questions to ask. Please don’t be afraid to seek assistance from the Washington Filmworks Film Office at any time.
